Kimberly Hollowitsch Endowed Scholarship
Kim chose to change professions in her later twenties and left the counseling field to pursue caring for others as a Registered Nurse. Kim balanced marriage, a newborn, and part-time employment in the first year of her Nursing studies. Kim was a dedicated student, involved in S.N.A., and embraced challenges in her academics.
Kim was nearing the beginning of her last semester of school and unfortunately was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. She withdrew to begin several rounds of chemotherapy and hospitalization at Mayo Clinic. She achieved full remission by December of 1999. She resumed her final semester of study while still receiving blood transfusions for post chemotherapy effects. She graduated in Spring of 2000 and began her career as an R.N. She worked at the Onalaska Care Center and eventually accepted a position in the Hospice Department of Franciscan Skemp Healthcare. She had an affinity for caregiving to the suffering and surviving.
Sadly Kim experienced a relapse of her illness in July of 2000 and had to immediately resume lifesaving chemotherapy, radiation, and eventual bone marrow transplant treatments. Despite good prognosis numbers and a sibling donor match Kim could not survive the transplant side effects. She died on November 1, 2001 at the age of 34.
This scholarship is endowed in her memory by her husband Mark and their daughter Mackenzie.
