Elsie McDowell Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Elsie McDowell dedicated more than five decades of service to Western Technical College, leaving a lasting impact through her steady presence, strong work ethic, and genuine care for others. She began her career in 1947, when the institution was known as the La Crosse Vocational School, and worked in the payroll department for 52 years. Through periods of growth, change, and modernization, Elsie remained a trusted and grounding figure, known for her precision, reliability, and quiet leadership.

Raised in De Soto, Wisconsin, as one of thirteen children, Elsie developed a lifelong commitment to caring for others. She was a central figure in her family, creating a warm and welcoming home and forming close bonds with her many nieces and nephews. Her generosity, humility, and dedication to others defined both her personal life and her professional career.

When Elsie passed in 2025, her family chose to honor her legacy in a meaningful and lasting way. The Elsie McDowell Memorial Endowed Scholarship, established through the Western Technical College Foundation, reflects her lifelong commitment to helping others. The scholarship supports students who embody her values of hard work, humility, and service.

Through this legacy, Elsie’s influence continues—supporting students, opening doors, and reinforcing the importance of compassion and dedication within the Western community.
